Abstract:
International audience ; Nowadays, there are no sources that mention difficulties in linguistic communication between Italian Romans and new gothic inhabitants who had been set up in different provinces. If all Goths didn't manage Latin when they first arrived, this was no longer the case for the next generation. Everything seems to point out the fact that the Goths were the ones that adapted themselves (and not the Romans that were numerically superior) by learning Latin without forgetting their own language for all that. The ruling family of the Amales showed the example of plurilingualism by keeping in its cultural legacy the Greek language that used to be spoken by the older ones in their previous life within the oriental part of the Empire. Romans who learned gothic within the ruling classes are considered exceptions and did learn this language out of a will of showing their attachment and great fidelity to the gothic courts and kings. The language is indeed perceived as one of the criteria to recognize a barbarian as much as the clothing and religion. Nevertheless, as shown by the sources of the Ostrogothic and Vandal kingdoms studied here, none of these criteria are sufficient nor absolute to identify a barbarian. ; Nous ne possédons pas de source qui évoque des difficultés de communication linguistique entre Romains d'Italie et nouveaux arrivants gothiques installés sur des terres dans différentes provinces. Si tous les Goths ne maîtrisaient pas le latin en arrivant, cette langue ne posait plus de problème à la génération suivante. Tout indique que ce sont eux qui se sont adaptés-et non les Romains très majoritaires-en apprenant la langue latine sans oublier la leur pour autant. La famille régnante des Amales a montré l' exemple du plurilinguisme, en gardant dans son bagage culturel le grec, pratiqué pour les plus anciens dans leur vie antérieure dans la partie orientale de l'Empire. Les Romains qui ont appris le gothique dans les catégories dirigeantes sont signalés comme des exceptions et on y voit alors une volonté de manifester son attachement à la cour et le signe d'une fidélité exceptionnelle aux souverains gothiques. La langue est en effet perçue comme l'un des critères auxquels on reconnaît un barbare, avec l'habillement et la religion, sans qu'aucun de ces critères ne soit à lui seul suffisant ni absolu, comme le montrent les sources des royaumes ostrogothiques et vandales ici étudiées.
